She loved them very much, but two girls would fight with each other from their earliest years. As they grew older, they became total strangers. They had no contact with each other when they were adults. This caused the mother great pain. Then, later, she had an idea. She decided to write a letter to them. In this letter, she told them how much she loved them, and how she wanted them to love each other in this way. She also gave them news of herself and some guidance on how to live happier lives. When the letter was ready, she wrote out one copy for each daughter, but these copies were special. Each copy contained only every second sentence of the original letter: the copy for one daughter had only the even (双数的) sentences, and the other daughter’s copy contained only the odd sentences. Neither contained the fullness of the mother’s message. When the two daughters received their letters, they were puzzled. To understand the half-letter, they would have to put the two letters together and read them as one, which meant they must approach one another again in love and respect. But they each blamed the other for not helping them when trying to read the half-letter. For a long time, the mother waited in vain. Then one day, when the mother had almost given up hope, there was a knock at the door. There they stood, together. “We’ve come home,” they said at the same time. “We’ve finally put our letters together, and we’ve come to say how much we love you, Mum.” Then she hugged them both, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks, and welcomed them back home. 56. C Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affect sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves. Decibels（分贝）measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect. Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales. A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales ’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected. Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds object to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean. 64. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures? A. The noises made by themselves. B. The man-made noises. C. The sound of earthquakes. D. The sound of the ice-breaking. 65. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true? A. They are deaf to noises. B. Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.
C. They are easily confused by noises. D. Noises at a certain level may hurt them. 66. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would______. A. benefit them a lot in their research work B. prevent them from doing their research work C. do good to their health D. increase the industrial output 67. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future? A. They will try their best to decrease noise. B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution. C. They will protect animals from harmful noises D.. They will study the effect of different noises. D Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires —not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes. Real riches consist of well ?developed and hearty capacities( 能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped( 淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They_live_in_too_big_a_house_with_too_many_rooms,_yet_their_house_of_life_is_a _hut. Your house of life ought to be a mansion( 豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have. Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry. Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go towards making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library. Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills. Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against
the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit. Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding. 68．The author intends to tell us that________． A．true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means B．big houses are people's most valued possessions C ．true happiness comes from spiritual riches D．big houses can in a sense bring richness of life 69．The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably implies that________． A．however materially rich, they remain spiritually poor B．however materially rich, they never seem to be satisfied C ．though their house is big, they prefer a simple life D．though their house is big, it seems to be a cage 70．It can be learned from the passage that ________ ． A．more money brings more happiness B．art is needed to make your house beautiful C ．sports contribute mainly to your physical fitness D．literature can enrich your spiritual life 71．What would be the best title for the passage? A．House of life B．Secret of wealth C ．Rest and refreshment D ．Interest and enthusiasm E Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone oxytocin( 荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently. “Women tend to be social in their behaviour. They often share with others. But men lend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status ，” said Professor Ryan. Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions (互动) such as falling in love or giving birth. But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy. Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship. Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants( 参与者 ) received oxytocin. The other half received placebo(安慰剂)． After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the
same procedure with the other material. Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions. The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better. Professor Ryan thus concluded, “Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behaviour differences between men and women are caused by biological factors(因素) that are mainly hormonal.” 72. What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text? A. Placebo. B. The social status. C. The gesture. D. Oxytocin. 73. What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment? A. Oxytocin affects our behaviour in a different way. B. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love. C. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behaviour differences. D. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success. 74. Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment? A. To know the differences between friendship and competition. B. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions. C. To know people's different abilities to answer questions. D. To test people's understanding of body language. 75. The author develops the text by ________ ． A. explaining people's behaviours C.discussing research experiments B. describing his own experiences D. distinguishing sexual differences

巫山中学高 2016 级英语期末试题答案
作文 As is indicated in the above material, many parents take care of their children in every way, depriving(剥夺)their kids of the chance to experience things by themselves. From where I stand, what the parents are doing may be harmful to their kids. For one thing, the children may grow dependent on them and never have the chance to grow up to have their own life. For another, with everything arranged, kids may take it for granted and never learn to be grateful. Therefore, deeply as the parents love their kids, they shouldn ’ t do everything for them.
Dear Sir or Madam, I'm Li Hua, a middle school student from China. I read the announcement of the summer camp that you have posted on the Internet and I am interested in it. I know that you welcome students from different countries and I'd like to take part in it. I've been learning English for 10 years, and I speak fluent English. What is more, I'll be able to tell students from other countries about China and learn about their countries as well. I hope I will be accepted as a member of your summer camp. Looking forward to your reply! Sincerely, Li Hua 录音材料原文 第一节 M: Will you watch my cat for me next weekend? I have to go to Florida for a business meeting, and I don’t know who else to ask. Do you see it by your purse over there? M: I’m sorry, Lance. I don’t see it anywhere. Maybe Cindy or Sam has it. They’re in the bathroom.(9) M: I’ll ask when they get back. I tried to tell my manager about it, but after Mr. Ainsworth talked to Tammy, he took her side and fired me on the spot. W: That’s ridiculous! You should complain to Mr. Ainsworth’s boss! M: Well, there isn’t much I can do about it. It’s basically my word against Tammy’s, and she has been there a lot longer than I have. Plus, I think Mr. Ainsworth would do pretty much anything she asked him to do.(15) W: How do the other people in the office think of Tammy? M: I’m not sure, but it’s pretty obvious that she is Mr. Ainsworth favorite person in the office. W: Well, it sounds like you are better off without that job. With your experience and skills, you can get a good job soon.(16) 10. Good morning, and welcome to our program. Today, we have pop star Margie Flynn joining us in the studio.
